uptime

The uptime command in Unix and Linux systems displays how long the system has been running, along with information about the current time, number of users logged in, and system load averages for the past 1, 5, and 15 minutes.

Basic Usage

Simply type uptime in your terminal:

uptime

Output Format

The uptime command typically outputs information in the following format:

14:32:07 up 7 days,  2:22,  3 users,  load average: 0.02, 0.04, 0.05
  • 14:32:07: Current time.

  • up 7 days, 2:22: Time the system has been up (7 days and 2 hours 22 minutes in this example).

  • 3 users: Number of users currently logged in.

  • load average: 0.02, 0.04, 0.05: Load averages for the past 1, 5, and 15 minutes respectively.

Interpretation of Load Averages

Load averages represent the average number of processes that are either in a runnable state or waiting for CPU time over a certain period of time. Here’s how to interpret them:

  • 1-minute load average: Average number of processes in the run queue over the last 1 minute.

  • 5-minute load average: Average number of processes in the run queue over the last 5 minutes.

  • 15-minute load average: Average number of processes in the run queue over the last 15 minutes.
