Use Case: Suitable for scenarios where performance is prioritized over data consistency, and the risk of losing the most recent data is acceptable.
Protocol B: Memory-Synchronous Replication
Behavior: The Primary node considers a write complete as soon as it is written to its local disk and transferred to the Secondary node’s memory. The Primary node does not wait for the Secondary to persist the data to disk.
Performance: Offers a balance between speed and safety. Network latency can still affect performance, but the Primary node can continue once the data is in the Secondary’s memory.
Risk: If both the Primary node fails and the Secondary loses power, the data stored only in the Secondary’s memory will be lost. However, this provides better data protection compared to Protocol A.
Use Case: Common in systems where slightly higher latency is acceptable for improved data safety but where disk-write acknowledgment is not necessary.
Protocol C: Synchronous Replication
Behavior: The Primary node waits for the Secondary node to write the data to its local disk before considering a write operation complete. Both nodes must confirm the write before proceeding.
Performance: Slower compared to Protocol A and B due to the need for full acknowledgment from the Secondary, including the disk write operation.
Risk: The most secure protocol, as it ensures that no data is lost in the event of a Primary node failure. The Secondary always has a complete and up-to-date copy of the data.
Use Case: Best suited for critical applications where data loss is unacceptable, such as financial or transactional systems requiring strong consistency and data durability.
